After writing about my love of making things for The New York Times Magazine, I made a conscious effort to do more of it.

While I’m primarily a writer, visual art was my first love, and now I think of it as a form of creative cross-training, exercising different creative muscles to strengthen my practice overall.

In the years between completing my PhD and launching my first book in 2021, I made many more things out of polymer clay, and they are still archived on my clay Instagram @baobae_clay. Additional visual and fiber arts projects can occasionally be found on my main Instagram @jenqiii.

Nature / Art Journaling

I began a nature journaling practice in 2023, during a monthlong writing residency in Crested Butte, CO. After over a decade of full-time academic medical research and then corporate hustle, I had begun the process of building a new balance for myself, continuing my creative writing career and building my freelance business in parallel.

Since then, art journaling has become a way for me to connect more deeply with my surroundings, both at home and while traveling.
